The etheral beauty of butterflies inspired Graff’s new jewellery collections

There’s nothing that recalls the splendour of springtime quite like the fluttering wings of a butterfly as it flits about the flowers in a garden.

For that reason, the ethereal creatures have served as fertile inspiration for many a jeweller who wants to immortalise their beauty in a palette of precious metals and glittering gemstones. Luxury diamond jeweller Graff is no different – butterflies have long been part of the brand’s oeuvre.

“In the tradition of the great jewellers throughout history, we design jewels and timepieces that perfectly mimic the natural elegance of a butterfly,” says Anne-Eva Geffroy, design director at Graff. “This deceptively simple motif, which has become synonymous with Graff, has, over the decades, offered us endless opportunities for reinterpretation.”

This year, Graff is expanding its butterfly kingdom with a new series of designs.

The Butterfly series is separated into four different collections – Butterfly Silhouette, Pavé Butterfly, Princess Butterfly and Butterfly watches – each with its own take on the motif.

Butterfly Silhouette includes delicate pieces highlighting the distinctive outline of the butterfly, traced in precious metals and set with brilliantly sparkling diamonds. The striking graphic shapes and minimalist setting makes this collection ideal for everyday wear. The new dual finger rings and sautoir necklace are particularly lovely, the latter with several butterflies suspended gracefully on a slim chain.

For an even more dazzling take on the butterfly, collectors can look towards the Pavé Butterfly collection, which is characterised by splendid clusters of pave-set diamonds and coloured gemstones set on the butterflies’ wings.

The gems, set by Graff’s master craftsmen, are configured to mimic the shimmering iridescence of a butterfly’s wings in nature. The pieces in the collection often feature butterflies in clusters of three, as though they’ve just touched down for a second to rest before a breeze sends them fluttering off into the sky.

For an even more true-to-life depiction, we turn to the Princess Butterfly collection, which features jewellery that has been carefully sculpted for lifelike volume. The pieces are invisibly set with custom-cut diamonds that seamlessly join to the next, adding an even greater sense of dimensionality to the pieces. Aside from the usual rings, necklaces and earrings, the Princess Butterfly collection also features secret watches, so you can tell the time without anyone being the wiser.

When it comes to butterfly watches, we have to admit that Graff’s are quite brilliant. Aside from those secret watches, the brand has also created a number of other timepieces that are equally dazzling. One example is the Classic Butterfly watch, which features a menagerie of white diamond butterflies nestled within its case, appearing to float just above the surface of the dial.
