Omega has had a big year already, celebrating 50 years of the Moonwatch and humankind’s first steps on the moon. And because news of the new Bond film seems to leak from the set daily – see the latest here – we have also had early glimpses of the possible Omega watch to emerge in the next film on the wrist of Daniel Craig, who plays the title character.
Today Omega introduces a new limited-edition Seamaster in honor of 50 years since the release of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the fifth James Bond film to emerge after kicking off the ultra-successful movie series in 1962 with Dr. No. See a quick rundown of the watches James Bond has worn throughout the entire series in Commemorating 56 Years Of Bond, James Bond: A Complete Rundown Of Watches Worn On Screen By The World’s Most Famous Fictional Spy.
The screen version of James Bond has not always worn Omega as outlined in that article; the Biel, Switzerland-based brand arrived along with the delightful Pierce Brosnan’s ultra-elegant version of the famous fictional spy in 1995’s GoldenEye.
Not surprisingly, Omega chose a sporty Seamaster Diver 300M from the 2019 collection introduced during the Swatch Group’s Time to Move event as the base model, from where the brand’s designers added a variety of cool 007-themed details.
Offered in a 42 mm size in stainless steel, this watch features a black PVD-coated black ceramic dial with a spiral brushing replicating the oculus gun barrel design and 9 mm bullet head at the beginning of every Bond film. That fun detail is why the hard-as-nails ceramic dial needed the added coating: ceramic is too hard to cut such a design into, so it was “cut” into the coating instead.
The edition is limited to 7,007 pieces – each watch’s individual number is shown on an 18-karat yellow gold plate on the case side – and Omega as usual plays with the 007 theme elsewhere as well. The same yellow gold was used to craft the hands and indexes, including the one at 12 o’clock, which is an inspired replica of the fictional Bond family’s coat of arms. On the seventh day of the month, the date window’s “7” shows up in the 007 logo font. And there is a hidden “50” in the Super-LumiNova of the marker at 10 o’clock, which only shows up in low-light conditions when the luminous substance goes to work. The automatic movement inside this timepiece is a certified Master Chronometer.
