Basel World is arguably the world’s most important watch and jewelry exhibition. Each year, Switzerland becomes the stage where sought-after brands, master jewelers and the international collectors and enthusiasts posse come together.

This year’s show which concluded yesterday, gifted us with show stopping timepieces that will keep us talking for the months to come. Here’s a selection of the exhibition’s undeniable stars.

Gucci’s Unisex Watch

In line with the current social trends, Gucci revealed its first unisex wrist watch collection, aptly named ‘The Grip’.

All four wristwatches feature a rectangular case and rotating dials which display the hour, minute and date behind small openings. The rest lies behind engraved gold and silver cases. Options also include PVD or calf leather straps.

Breitling Navitimer 1 41

For more than 65 years, the Breitling Navitimer 1 family has been one of the world’s most beloved mechanical chronographs. Its sleek aesthetics and back to robust basics approach make sure that watch aficionados as well as novice customers put it high on their must-haves lists.

This year, Breitling returned with a slightly bigger version of the Navitimer 1, featuring a 41mm case. The three hander also includes a date display opening and boasts a beaded bezel equipped with a slide rule. An true instant classic.

Chopard L.U.C. Collection

The L.U.C Collection is a tribute to Louis-Ulysse Chopard, who in 1860 founded the company that still bears his name. Each timepiece is the ultimate expression of beauty and watchmaking art, making L.U.C a timepiece of distinction.

The undeniable highlight of the collection is the Urushi timepieces created by the artist Kiichiro Masumura, the Japanese “Living National Treasure”. Masumura has created this unique dial for Chopard based on the time-honoured lacquering techniques of Urushi and Maki-e. Marrying ancestral craftsmanship with the highest degree of Swiss watchmaking, this majestic work of art portrays the Plum Blossom, en elegant bloom symbolising faithfulness, patience and harmony according to Chinese tradition.
